Many ask if it’s worth the time and trouble to hoard hundreds of thousands of miles. The answer is an overwhelming yes, and the subject of this post shows exactly why. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m from Puerto Rico and being form the Caribbean we love our baseball. Regardless whether you played it growing up or not, follow the majors constantly or not, if you’re from the Caribbean you’re likely to have a special bond with this sport. So when the opportunity came to attend the Puerto Rico vs. USA game of the World Baseball Classic I took it in a heart beat.
Just this past week my wife and I had been visiting family in Seattle, in hopes to be there when a new member of the family decided to make his way into the world. Unfortunately, he decided that he didn’t want us around in the big occasion so he remained all cozied up and it wasn’t until after we had already traveled back home that he decided it was time. Well thanks Mark! But welcome to the world, and we love you very much! While we were in Seattle though, my wife’s brother, who lives in San Diego, mentioned that he was about to buy tickets to go the game with some other Puerto Rican friends of ours who also live in San Diego. Ding ding ding! I used 25k MileagePlus miles to book an award roundtrip ticket. You can easily get two domestic roundtrips like this one I booked when getting approved and meeting the minimum spend requirement for the Chase MileagePlus Explorer card, which currently has an increased signup bonus offer of 50k MileagePlus miles.
For most, going back out on a trip right after arriving from one would be unthinkable. Of course, we all have different circumstances, so this scenario wouldn’t be possible for some. But there are likely other scenarios that you can capitalize on IF you’ve been diligent in regards to your miles and points strategy. In other words, upon being invited to this game I was able to quickly check award availability with United and book myself a round-trip ticket to and back from San Diego. The ticket was priced at over $600 out of pocket, which would’ve been a deal breaker. No baseball game is worth that much money in my mind. But what if I had no miles available? Given that I recently purchased several premium award tickets, what if I had only decided to earn enough for those redemptions? Then I would’ve instead enjoyed the game from my couch, which needless to say is not as good an experience. If you’re thinking about making your way into this points game, see my beginner’s basics and our list of recommended ways to earn miles with United, and of course follow my blog for daily tips, deals and helpful news.
In conclusion, and what the whole point of this post is: always plan for an overage, because sooner or later you’ll reap the reward. I did.
