If you live in SoCal, you’ve driven to LAX at some point to catch a flight, perhaps because you’d rather drive than catch a regional flight. Because you’ve driven to LAX to catch a flight, you know how stressful driving to Los Angeles can be at any time of day, any day of the week. Well rejoice all those south of Los Angeles and those living in Orange county. Through the Star Alliance network you’ll have an option to fly nonstop to Europe from San Diego. United partner Lufthansa will launch nonstop service between San Diego and Frankfurt by next summer.
If you’re a United flyer this is great news for you. You’ll be able to redeem your United miles to fly on this new Lufthansa route! This is what Lufthansa’s official news release had to say about the new offering:
New from Frankfurt Hub:
San Diego (USA) is the second largest city in the U.S. state of California and eighth overall in the Unites States. The city is located in southwest California, close to the Mexican border. Due to the pleasant climate, San Diego is known as „America’s Finest City“ by its residents. The beaches and waves of the Pacific are particularly suitable for surfing. The city is also a hotspot for the biotech and telecommunications industry. Beginning in summer 2018, Lufthansa will offer five weekly San Diego flights from Frankfurt.
As you can see, there’s very little details about this new route. That being said, if I were to take a guess, this service will begin likely before summer and will be serviced by either an A330 or an A340, the A330 being my top guess. In any case, if you read the blog you know how I feel about Germans and Germany in general, and having lived in San Diego some years ago I know what a great option this is considering the current lack of Europe nonstop flights. So folks in SoCal, you have almost a year to bulk up your points and miles balances – you can start here.
