United is first US airline to launch miles earning prepaid card

Via Netspend Press Room, United is partnering with Netspend to launch “the first prepaid card program in the U.S. offering a consumer the opportunity to directly earn miles for qualifying purchases made with a prepaid card.” The MileagePlus Go Visa Prepaid card will be available this summer and will be a new method to earn United miles.

What we know

  • Card earns MileagePlus miles
  • FDIC insured
  • Website: www.mileageplusgo.com
  • Issued by Republic Bank & Trust
  • Requires active MileagePlus account

What we don’t know yet

  • MileagePlus miles earning rate per $
  • Fee structure
  • How to maximize earnings

Who could benefit the most

  • Those whose credit situation prevents them from applying for new MileagePlus/CUR earning credit cards
  • Those who don’t wish to apply for new MileagePlus/CUR earning credit cards
  • Those who want to earn United miles without tapping into their credit limit
  • Those in search for a new method to earn United miles 🙂

Any time a new miles/points earning method comes around it’s good news.  Is this card going to be the most lucrative method to earn United miles? Not likely. But it still provides you with an additional and viable option. Now there’s an option for credit-card-less folks to earn on daily/regular spend! That sounds like a game changer. That being said, the fee structure and earning rate unknowns are big question marks and until we know more, it’s impossible to determine how good this card really is, or if its really worth it. One thing’s for sure, the points and miles is NOT dead.
