United cuts back on domestic First Class meal options

This was news weeks ago, but I was out and about and just saw the draft sadly sitting there… I wrote about how United will roll out new items come November in their economy inflight dining offering, the Choice Menu. That’s great news, after United discontinued some items from the menu. In the meantime, the opposite happened in the with the domestic First Class offering.

At the beginning of September, United made these changes, as shared by qukslvr619 on FlyerTalk:

Flights 2:30-2:59 hrs:
Breakfast: Remove breakfast breads only
Lunch: Two cold meal options and a chocolate truffle (vs one hot and one cold option, mixed nuts/bread//side)
Dinner: One hot meal/one cold meal option (vs two hot options); offers mixed nuts/bread/salad/dessert

Flights 3:00-3:59
Breakfast/Lunch: No change
Dinner: One hot meal/one cold meal option (vs two hot options); offers mixed nuts/bread/salad/dessert

Flights 4:00-5:24 (exc. transcons)
Breakfast, lunch and dinner have cold and hot meal options (vs two hot-meals)
Pre-plated dessert replaces ice cream/sorbet on lunch/dinner flights

United had been making great progress in their inflight premium cabin dining offering, so this move is at the very least confusing. I wonder whether anyone in the room asked the obvious question: are these changes improving service to our customer? The obvious answer seems to be no. One thing that I have noticed is that it’s quite common -sometimes half the premium cabin- to pass on the meal service. Perhaps United has crunched some numbers and feel they can do well with the reduced options. Umm…. I don’t know…

Then again, United has been quite active tinkering with both First and economy cabin dining menus as of late, so don’t expect this to be final. Feedback from FA’s and customers should have an impact some months from now. We’ll have to wait and see.
