So are you ready for take off this spring?  How about Bavaria?

Earlier this year in May, my wife and I visited Germany.  We planned the trip about 2 months before we went, and couldn’t have been happier that we were points FIT so we could decide on a somewhat short notice to make the trip.  Here’s how much we spent on airfare, hotel, and car rental:

Expense What? Points/Miles Out-of-Pocket
Airfare ORD>MUC Lufthansa Business Class 140k UA miles X 2 = 280k UA miles $39.60 X 2 = $79.20
Hotel Munich Marriott Hotel (5 nights) 99,200 BA Avios $0.00
Car Avis 4-door VW 19,400 BA Avios $0.00
Total $79.20

As you can see, the value that we can reap from this hobby is amazing!  (Note: Using airline miles, like British Avios, for hotels or car rentals is not usually a good redemption; however, at this particular time I had a huge surplus that I wasn’t planning on using anytime soon so I went for it.)

This is one example of how your loyalty to United is rewarded through one of its main partners.

You don’t have to be rich to travel to your most desired destination and in style.  As an alternative, you could book this same trip in Lufthansa economy class for just 60k United miles per person.  Not bad…  And from time to time you may even be able to do it for 45k by leveraging a United promotion!

So how can you earn the miles and points I used for this trip?  See the methods available to you here.  If you have concerns about the effect that applying for multiple credit cards will have on your credit, read this.

Hope you make it to Bavaria (or somewhere else far) this year!
