Lufthansa business class award availability in 2017

One of my favorite United partners to fly on is Lufthansa.  In transatlantic flights their Business product does it for me, given that the flights aren’t the longest around out of ORD.  I try to fly first transpacific instead, since those flights are longer.  Anyhow, last year Lufthansa started to release premium class award space about two weeks prior to departure, although economy was wide open consistently.  That’s cutting it REALLY close, especially if you have specific dates in which you need to fly.  Some suggested booking a premium award ticket with a different carrier and change it if the space became available with Lufthansa within 2 weeks of departure.  Then in October United hit with a new fee and ticketing fee structure.  Little by little booking Lufthansa premium class award tickets became more and more difficult.  At the very least you’d have to pay for ticketing a premium award ticket within 21 days of flying (there’s a way around this but there aren’t any guarantees).

I assumed this trend would continue into 2017 so I went out to check how it’s looking this first week of the year and see if I could snatch anything valuable anytime in the next few months. Well I was pleasantly surprised to find that Lufthansa Business award availability is wide open to Europe from both east and west coasts – over 2 months in advance of departure!  Off the bat this makes a difference for General Members, Premier Silver and Premier Gold members, as they can book 21 days or more before departure.  But if not for the fee, it’s simply WAY BETTER than waiting to book 2 weeks before departure.

I love the ORD-FRA nonstop on the less and less bookable 747.  Availability is open through either Frankfurt or Munich to many other countries in Europe in LH metal.

Another example from New York to Munich.

This time Seattle to Frankfurt.

All that being said, I’m suspicious that Lufthansa will fall back into the same pattern as last year, so I’d recommend you take advantage of this availability as soon as possible.  See my Bavaria post as reference on booking LH business.

In conclusion:

  • Lufthansa offers an above average premium product.
  • Lufthansa still offers the opportunity to travel in style on THE classic 747 on Frankfurt routes.
  • A large amount of destinations in Europe to travel to are now bookable 2 months before departure.
