Clunky old MileagePlus X and its new merchants

For the past week and a half I had been having issues with my MileagePlus X app. There seemed to be no explanation for the problem other than the app just acting up. Although a year or two ago when I had to reach out to MPX Support I received a prompt response and assistance, there was no response this time around. MPX has always had issues here and there. But they seemed to be somewhat sporadic, and in my case at least, anytime that I ran into an issue it would quickly disappear.

It was my turn

In the last few months, however, I’ve noticed an increase of user reports in FlyerTalk about the app’s unreliability. Some readers of the blog also have reached out to report the issues they’re encountering, like Stacey:

My app worked fine for a couple of years. The last few months it keeps showing an error message. When I emailed them they wrote back to say I needed to be physically in the US (I was in California). Then they wrote that I should avoid using it for two weeks. It’s been more than that and it still doesn’t work despite me signing out/in, uninstalling/reinstalling the app, etc. I’m writing this here hoping that somebody else had a similar issue and managed to resolve it.

Fortunately for me, I had never had an issue last more than a day. That streak ended two weeks ago, when I attempted to purchase a Starbucks gift card. I kept getting the same error over and over again. I tried several things from de-installing the app to changing my password to yelling at my phone. Nothing worked. Two weeks leaving miles on the table and for no apparent reason. Again, support said nothing.

Then out of nowhere today and once more for no apparent reason my app works again. It’s not the end of the world; it’s just annoying. Hey MileagePlus X dev team, get your act together!!


The good news

I wrote a few days back about how we -but especially contractors- can benefit from Home Depot being added as a MPX merchant. Home Depot is not the only one. You might have received an e-mail in the last couple of days with the announcement of new partners:


In conclusion, this is THE miles earning app, and any time new merchants are added it’s good news. That being said, the recent unreliability with the app is worrisome and the MPX team does well in spending some time in addressing them. Furthermore, they should certainly do a better job of getting back to affected customers in a timely manner. MPX is a great incentive for folks to fly United and taking any incentive away from the customer is not a good idea.

  1. Glad to hear yours is up and running again. I’ve been out of the US so haven’t been able to test whether mine works again … hoping!

  2. I’ve been searching for a solution to my mileageplus x problems but can find nothing on the internet. I just installed the app within the last month and made 2 purchases just fine. Now it no longer works. I get a message after trying to make a purchase that says the transaction is declined and I should contact contact them via email. Their customer service is…non-existant IMO. I’ve deleted and re-installed the app, checked my FF # and cc info. Checked with cc company. Card in good standing with no denied charges. Miles are left on the table. Anyone else experiencing any issues?
