I’m always looking for ways to earn bonus UA miles and today I received a notification that, for a limited time, when you use the MileagePlusX app for purchases in Gap, Banana Republic or Old Navy, you’ll net 10 UA miles per dollar spent. Usually, the earn rate for Gap brands is 5 UA miles/$, so this is a no-brainer if you plan to do some shopping in any of these stores.
Keep in mind that you’re able to earn 25% UA bonus miles on the purchase amount if you’re a MileagePlus Explorer cardholder, not if you use it. But if you use a United co-branded credit card, you’ll get the miles/$ for the purchase on top of the MileagePlusX earnings.
One more thing to consider, if you’re a Gap/Banana Republic/Old Navy credit cardholder, is that you may be able to further leverage benefits from those credit cards. My wife holds a Banana Republic credit card and she often receives offers for bonus BR points by doing outside BR/Gap/Old Navy purchases. MileagePlusX would be a great opportunity to jump in on one of those offers and earn BR points plus UA miles at the same time. See a similar example of doing this with a different merchant here.
One additional note: review the terms and conditions of the MPX gift cards, to ensure that you understand them. For instance, if we want the ability to return any items, we’d instead received store credit instead of a reimbursement to the original form of payment, if we made the purchase using MPX. For that reason, ensure that you’ve thoroughly read the terms so you’re not caught unawares.
In conclusion, MileagePlusX is an awesome tool that only United has made available to its frequent flyer program members and this is a good offer if you were thinking of spending some money in any of these stores. Otherwise, happy shopping!
